AusPost fake email leads to ransomware

We have previously reported about fake Australia Post emails where the recipient is informed of a "missed delivery", which in fact leads the victim to download Malware.

This phishing attempt is back, but with one sinister alteration. The malware that the victim unknowingly installs is now what is know as ransomware, a type of malware which restricts access to the computer system it infects, and demands a ransom paid to the creator(s) of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed.

From January to August 2014, this crypto-style ransomware has seen over a 700 percent increase in detections by anit-malware software and companies. Based on this staggering trend, it is highly recommended that you update your current internet security software, and take a holistic approach to cybersecurity.

When it comes to crypto-style ransomware, prevention is the best approach, so make sure you always practise safe browsing habits, and learn to protect yourself online.
